The Lullaby Club

A passion project born out of the pandemic, this short teaser is the start of a documentary short about The Lullaby Club and its founder, Axel Mansoor, that became a viral sensation on the app Clubhouse in the first year of its existence. The project is still in production.

Synopsis: The nightly ritual of a lullaby, sung by a parent to their newborn, carries a melancholic history. On a whispered virtual nightly variety show, modernity intersects with lullaby on the audio-only interactive social app, Clubhouse. This nightly ritual has become a movement, with thousands flocking each week to the audio-only social app Clubhouse to enter one room: the Lullaby Club, where musicians and spoken word artists whisper to one another and perform lullaby versions of their favorite songs, stories and poems to an audience of thousands. While novel in its application of a familiar tradition, lullabies are anything but new; they carry a long history of melancholic consolation. Exploring the nature of lullabies across time and technological transmission, we follow a modern global community as it uses this tradition to foster connection in challenging times. In an insider pass to the virtual room that celebrities frequent and articles in the NYT praise, we glimpse into the lives of the “Lullabears,” hear stories from listeners and gain insights from experts in their field. Blending a dreamy lyrical shooting style with whispered interviews, archival footage, intimate home recordings, CG animations and high production dreamscapes, the story unfolds as an extension of the room itself-- an audiovisual lullaby about our human need to connect and be soothed in dark times, using whatever tools we have at hand. Together, we’ll explore the phenomena of Lullaby Club and what it means to our modern age.
